Local government boundaries

31/10/2008

The Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBC) for Scotland publishes its provisional proposals for the realignment of the administrative boundary between Glasgow City and North Lanarkshire near Stepps today.

The public's views are sought on the proposals: written or email representations should be submitted to the Commission by January 30, 2009.

Details of the proposals can be found on the Local Government Boundary Commission's website and can be viewed at Stepps Library, Riddrie Library, The Bridge in Easterhouse, and both North Lanarkshire and Glasgow Council Headquarters.

The Commission's Secretary, Dr Hugh Buchanan said:

"We are particularly keen to hear from those residents and electors affected by the proposed changes, but would welcome any interested parties' views, whether in favour of the proposals or not."

The boundary review was initiated following a direction made by Scottish Ministers in March 2008. The existing boundary runs through residential properties in a recently built development in the Cardowan area of Stepps, which has led to difficulties in the effective and convenient local government of the area.

The Commission is proposing that the boundary be realigned with the southernmost edge of the neighbourhood. This will result in the transfer of around 170 homes from Glasgow City Council area to North Lanarkshire Council area.

As a consequence of the administrative boundary review, council wards within the affected area will also change. The affected wards are: Glasgow - North East (Ward 21); North Lanarkshire - Strathkelvin (Ward 5). The Commission proposes to alter the boundary between these wards to reflect the change to the administrative boundary.

Following the public consultation, the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland will consider the representations received, and decide whether a Local Inquiry is necessary. The Commission expects to report its final recommendations to Scottish Ministers later in 2009.
