Judicial Appointments Board

03/10/2008

Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill today announced the appointment of Sheriff Kenneth Ross as a member of the Judicial appointments Board for Scotland.

Sheriff Ross will replace Sheriff Douglas Allan whose term of office comes to an end in October.

Sheriff Ross is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. He qualified as a solicitor in 1973, became a Temporay Sheriff in 1987 and a Sheriff in 1997. He currently sits in the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde Dumfries and Galloway at Dumfries.

Sheriff Ross has been appointed to the Board for a period of three years. He will take up his appointment during October.

The appointment is part-time and carries a commitment of around 20-30 days a year. Sheriff Ross, being a serving Sheriff, receives no fee for his attendance.

The appointments of the new Sheriff member followed recommendations to Scottish Ministers by the Lord President following an independent selection panel chaired by the Lord Wheatley, judge of the Court of Session.

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland was set up in 2002 with a remit to advise Ministers on the appointment of Judges, Sheriffs Principal and Sheriffs (both full-time and part-time).

There are ten members, five legal members (a Judge, Sheriff Principal, Sheriff, an Advocate and a Solicitor) and five lay members including Sir Neil McIntosh as the lay Chairman.
