Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today announced the new appointment of the Chair of NHS National Services Scotland Board.

Ms Sturgeon said:

Mr Bill Matthews has shown strong commitment to public service and has demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues being faced within NHSScotland. His wealth of experience and knowledge will be extremely valuable. I look forward to working with him in the vital task of improving the health of the people of Scotland."

Mr Bill Matthews is a former senior executive with Motorola in Scotland who now combines management consultancy across a variety of sectors with a number of non-executive positions. He is an independent member of the board of the Scottish Police Services Authority for which he receives remuneration of £229 per day, and is also a member of the board of the Security Industry Authority for which he receives annual remuneration of £9,000.

This appointment will be for a period of two years from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2010.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of three days per week for which the annual remuneration is £24,180.

NHS National Services Scotland provides a diverse range of strategic services to ensure frontline patient care is delivered effectively across Scotland.

This Ministerial appointment was made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Mr Matthews has not been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
