Dundee's cultural attractions

12/08/2008

Several of Dundee's local museums and heritage sites which house collections of national significance will be visited today by Minister for Culture Linda Fabiani who is in the city as part of her Summer Tour.

The Minister will begin her tour at the McManus Galleries and Museum where she will see firsthand Dundee City Council's renovation project and view the city's Fine and Decorative Art, and Whaling Collections.

She will later visit the Verdant Works museum and view the Jute Collection housed there. The afternoon will see Ms Fabiani shown around RRS Discovery and the Polar Collection, both at Discovery Point.

Culture Minister Linda Fabiani said:

"There is so much great work being done here to promote and improve access to these nationally significant collections.

"Dundee's seafaring past and its jute industry are important aspects of Scotland's heritage and our national identity. That is why the Scottish Government funds the Recognition Scheme, managed by Museums Galleries Scotland, which makes funding available to non-national museums for the ongoing protection and promotion of these culturally valuable collections.

"I wish Dundee City Council well with the challenging renovation work it is undertaking at the McManus Galleries and Museum. Equally, well done to Dundee Heritage Trust for achieving five-star VisitScotland ratings for both Verdant Works and RRS Discovery. Both the Council and Heritage Trust's work on display today are great examples of widening access to our nationally significant collections, allowing current and future generations to appreciate Dundee's heritage."
