09/06/2008

The Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister, has appointed Kenneth Richard Robb, solicitor, to be a sheriff for the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway. Mr Robb will sit in the Sheriff Courts of Stranraer and Kirkcudbright.

Mr Robb, 53, was recommended for appointment by the independent Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland which ran an open competition earlier this year. Mr Robb will take up his duties at the end of June.

Mr Kenneth Robb is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1978. A partner in Marshall Wilson, Solicitors in Falkirk, from 1987 until 2000, latterly he has held a number of judicial offices, most notably as part-time immigration judge and part-time chairman of the Employment Tribunal (Scotland). He was appointed a part-time sheriff in July 2006.

This appointment fills the vacancy that arose when Sheriff James Smith retired on December 31, 2007.

The salary of a sheriff is £123,200.

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland was established by Ministers in 2002. The Board is an independent advisory body whose role is to recommend for appointment to the offices of judge, sheriff principal, sheriff and part-time sheriff. The First Minister retains the responsibility for making nominations to Her Majesty the Queen. The First Minister is required by statute to consult the Lord President of the Court of Session before making his nomination.
