Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, Richard Lochhead today announced the appointment of a new member to the Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).

The new member is Mrs Angela McNaught, an accountant with more than 20 years experience. She has held the position of Finance Director of an exhibition organising subsidiary of the Earls Court and Olympia Group for six years and is currently Chair of a local play group in Edinburgh.

She will bring to the Board skills and experience in financial management, corporate governance and risk management. Mrs McNaught has a keen personal interest in horticulture and is a strong supporter of the work of the RBGE.

This appointment will be for four years and will run from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2012.

This post is part-time and attracts no remuneration. The total time commitment is approximately 16 days per year. Mrs McNaught holds no other public appointments.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non-Departmental Public Body established under the National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985 and is mainly funded by the Scottish Government. Its mission is "to explore and explain the world of plants" and its primary functions are: science, horticulture, education and information and visitor services.

Ministerial public appointment are made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Mrs McNaught has declared no political activity.
