Highland stop for 2014 roadshow

30/05/2008

The people of the Highlands are being asked what legacy they want from the 2014 Commonwealth Games at an event in Inverness next week.

The event takes place at Highland Council headquarters, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness on Wednesday, June 4 between 1730 and 1930.

Scottish Government staff will make a presentation about the development of a Commonwealth Games legacy, which will be followed by a question and answer session.

Places are limited and anyone wishing to attend should call Claire McKenna on 0131 244 0993 or email: glasgow2014commonwealthgameslegacy@scotland.gsi.gov.uk

The Scottish Government will publish an interim action plan towards the end of this year, and a Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan in summer 2009.

Minister for Communities and Sport, Stewart Maxwell, said:

"I hope that as many people as possible turn out in Inverness next week. We want to hear their views on what they want from the 2014 Games.

"This Government has always made clear that hosting the 2014 Games is not just about hosting a two-week sporting festival.

"It presents Scotland with great opportunities to make real improvements to people's lives, to raise our sights as a nation and regenerate communities across the country.

"We need individuals, groups and organisations to examine our proposals rigorously, and to think creatively about how the Games can help in their area."
