Appointment to Commission

Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture today announced the appointment of a new Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.

The new Commissioner is:

Elspeth Reid has been the Archivist with Falkirk Council since 1992 and previously worked for a range of other archives in Scotland and Canada. She has a degree in history from the University of St Andrews and a Masters degree from the University of Guelph, Ontario. She is a former Chair of the Society of Archivists, Scotland . Working with Falkirk Council has enabled her to gain relevant cross-domain experience from their integrated approach to heritage and the wider cultural sector.

This appointment will be for five years and runs from March 26, 2008 to October 31, 2012.

This post is part-time and is not remunerated. There is a time commitment of the equivalent of up to two days per month. Ms Reid holds no other Ministerial appointments.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland

  • Identifies, surveys and interprets the built environment of Scotland
  • Preserves, cares for and adds to the information and the items in the National Collection relating to the archaeological, architectural and historical environment
  • Promotes public understanding and enjoyment of the information and items in the Collection

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. The appointee has not declared any political activity in the past five years.
