Moves to improve tenant participation

21/04/2008

A Registered Tenant Organisations (RTOs) network for East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire is being launched in Glasgow later this week.

The new network is one of nine being established across Scotland to provide a formal structure connecting tenant organisations and the Scottish Government.

The regional network aims to encourage more tenants to participate in their local organisations and share their views on social housing. The network is being launched at its first Annual General Meeting at Highlander House, Glasgow.

Minister for Communities and Sport Stewart Maxwell said:

"The Scottish Government is committed to putting the interests of tenants, current and future, first when making decisions about social housing, as we made clear in our housing discussion paper Firm Foundations.

"We look forward to working in partnership with regional Registered Tenant Organisations networks to improve the housing and well-being of tenants and residents across Scotland."

Allan Todd from Auchinairn & Crowhill Tenants and Residents Association in East Dunbartonshire who will be chairing the Inaugural AGM said:

"The launch of our RTO regional network is a positive step forward for RTOs in our area. The network will promote the rights and views of tenants and residents' throughout the region in partnership with the Scottish Government."

The inaugural Annual General Meeting of the Regional Network is to take place at 11am on April 25, 2008 at Highlander House in Glasgow.

There are around 670 RTOs, and over 90 representatives from RTOs have been working towards establishing nine regional networks. Each regional network covers a number of local authority areas and they are being supported by the Scottish Government's Tenant Participation Development Team.
