Scotland Week hailed a success

07/04/2008

The US Scotland Week celebrations have been an overwhelming success and have generated enormous interest in Scotland, according to First Minister Alex Salmond on his return.

He said:

"The celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the US Senate's Tartan Day Resolution also showed the extensive connections between Scotland and America - past, present and future.

"With all three Presidential candidates sending messages of support for the Tartan Day and Scotland Week celebrations, it emphasises the strength and depth of the bonds between Scotland and America.

"We had exceptional political support throughout the week. From the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a 47 strong Congressional membership of the Scottish caucus - and soon to be 20 members in the Senate as pledged by Senator Jim Webb at the Tartan Day reception.

"To have one in five members of the Senate member would undoubtedly be of major significance to Scotland, and I look forward to Senator Webb increasing the caucus membership."
