Learning and Teaching Scotland

Minister for Schools and Skills, Maureen Watt, today announced the appointment of a new member to the Board of Learning and Teaching Scotland.

The new member is:

Iain Alister Nisbet

Mr Nisbet, a qualified solicitor, is the Head of the Education Law Unit (ELU) in Govan Law Centre and has considerable experience of committee work in the area of disability rights and policy implemented to support pupils with additional support needs. He is also a member of the Parent Council at his son's primary school.

Mr Nisbet does not hold any other ministerial public appointments.

This appointment will be for the period from March 1, 2008 to July 31, 2011.

This post is part-time, requires a time commitment of 10-15 days per year and is not remunerated.

LTS is an executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) which:

  • Actively promotes a climate of innovation and ambition throughout the Scottish education system
  • Provides support to teachers, schools and local authorities in improving the quality of education and raising levels of achievement of all learners
  • Ensures the curriculum and approaches to learning and teaching, including the use of ICT, assists children and young people in Scotland to develop their full potential and works in close partnership with the Scottish Government and other key stakeholders to build capacity and deliver a first class education that is recognised as such nationally and internationally

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. The appointee has not declared any political activity within the last five years.
