Resignation of Bertie Ahern

02/04/2008

First Minister Alex Salmond today commented on the announcement that the Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern is to step down from the post.

Mr Salmond said:

"Bertie Ahern has been a friend and political colleague for many years. I had breakfast with him in February when he hosted the British-Irish council in Dublin and he was speaking optimistically about the future of Ireland.

"His political career is one of great achievement. He was a key player in bringing about the historic Good Friday agreement, and I am in no doubt his significant contribution to the peace efforts - and devolution - will be a fitting and lasting legacy for his 30 years in politics.

"He has never failed to impress me - as Taoiseach - and in his previous and wider roles in Irish politics, and under his premiership Ireland has enjoyed an unprecedented period of economic and social success. The accomplishments of the Irish Celtic Tiger economy demonstrate the advantage of being a small independent nation in Europe.

"I have written to him today congratulating him on his term in office and his many achievements as Taoiseach. He will always be welcome as a steady friend of Scotland.

"I wish him the very best for the future."
