Health Board funding allocations
08/02/2008
Funding for NHS boards in Scotland will rise to £8 billion next year, shared among 14 territorial NHS boards and eight special health boards.
Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon said each board would benefiting from an average increase of 3.3 per cent within NHS Scotland's overall budget of over £10.65 billion.
Ms Sturgeon said:
"Improving the health of all people in Scotland is a top priority for the Scottish Government and today's funding announcement will help us achieve this.
"An additional £257.5 million is being provided to enable NHS boards to meet the needs of their local populations in line with the priorities we have set.
"This funding announced today will help health boards deliver better, faster and more local access to treatment, particularly in our most deprived communities.
"I am confident it will make a real difference to the lives of everyone in Scotland."
The revenue allocations for territorial boards are calculated using the Arbuthnott Formula. The formula takes account of the population in the NHS Board area, the age of the population, gender, level of deprivation and the proportion of population living in remote and rural areas. NHS Boards receive funding based on their need using the Arbuthnott formula.
NHS and Special Health Boards have been given an initial general allocation of £8,048.2 million for 2008-09, an average increase over the equivalent 2007-08 allocation of £257.5 million, or 3.3 per cent.
All have received a standard increase of 3.15 per cent. In addition, the Scottish Government has provided additional resources to those Boards who are below both their Arbuthnott and NHSScotland Resource Allocation Committee (NRAC) target allocations in 2008-09 in advance of any decision on implementation of the NRAC recommendations, these Boards are NHS Lothian, NHS Fife, NHS Forth Valley, NHS Grampian, NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Orkney.
