Sport should benefit the whole country - Minister
02/02/2008
2007 was a tremendous year for Scottish sport and in 2008 we must capitalise on that success, Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell told delegates at the annual seminar of the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils (SALSC) today.
In a speech to delegates, Mr Maxwell said Scotland must grasp the opportunities and benefits presented through the country securing the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the streamlining of sportscotland.
Speaking at the meeting Mr Maxwell said:
"2007 was a tremendous year. We secured the 2014 Commonwealth Games, our national football team regained its reputation, our cyclists and swimmers performed well and only recently Alex Marshall retained his title at the World Indoor Bowls Championships.
"This is an important time for Scottish sport and that is why it's essential we have the right structures in place to take us forward and build on these successes.
"Last month I announced we will streamline sportscotland. This will deliver for sport in a more effective and efficient manner, which will benefit the whole country.
"In partnership with sportscotland, local authorities and governing bodies, sports councils and SALSC can and should play an important role in shaping future success.
"The Scottish Government is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all Scots through increasing participation, improving local facilities and ensuring we capitalise and enjoy the long term benefits sport offers."
