Minister comments on farm income statistics

31/01/2008

Statistics on farm income estimates for 2007 were published today.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs Richard Lochhead today confirmed his commitment to fight Scotland's case during forthcoming reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Speaking following the release of the figures which showed an 11.9 per cent increase in farming income between 2006 and 2007, the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs warned that fortunes were mixed.

Mr Lochhead said:

"While sectors such as arable crops enjoyed a very good year, we should remember that there were difficulties for others - particularly the livestock industry.

"I will be using the current Health Check of the Common Agricultural Policy to look for ways to help the livestock sector to continue to play its vital part in the life of rural Scotland."
