Funding boost for higher education

28/01/2008

Universities will benefit from a £10 million funding boost this year, Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop announced today.

Ms Hyslop had previously committed to make universities a priority for additional funding. Extra funds have been allocated immediately, through in-year flexibility.

Ms Hyslop said:

"Universities are at the heart of our drive to build a smarter, more prosperous Scotland.

"That's why, even though we are facing an extremely tight financial settlement, I have worked hard to source extra resources for Scotland's universities.

"I know the pressure that universities are under. Resources are tight. I made a commitment to find more money if I could and today I am delivering on that. Ten million pounds will make a difference to universities, lecturers and importantly students across the country."

Scottish universities were allocated £263 million during the spending review.

A Joint Future Thinking Taskforce has been established to explore the future of higher education in Scotland. The group will look at a wide-range of issues facing universities including future funding.
