Mental Health Act Review Group

Members of the group set up to undertake a limited review of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 were announced today by Minister for Public Health Shona Robison.

The aims of the group include:

  • To review the processes in respect of the civil provisions of the Act and to advise on changes that should be made to improve the efficiency of the operation of the Act and experience of patients
  • To advise on minor amendments to the Act
  • To engage with those who operate the Act and report back to the Minister for Public Health with recommended changes

The review is expected to be completed by November this year.

Professor of Criminal Justice at Glasgow Caledonian University Jim McManus has been appointed Convenor, along with the following members:

Annie McGeeney, Mental Health Officer, South Lanarkshire Council

Jamie Malcolm, Nurse Commissioner, Mental Welfare commission

Ian Boddy, Service Manager, NHS Dumfries & Galloway

Graham Morgan, Service User, Highland User Group (HUG) and Voices of Experience (VOX)

Carolyn Little, Chair of National Schizophrenia Fellowship (NSF) and member of User and Carer Involvement, Dumfries

Dr John Mitchell, Associate Medical Director, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Isobel Montgomery, Solicitor, Tribunal Member

Hilary Patrick, Legal Member

The Group will be consulting widely and taking views from a wide range of organisations and individuals with an interest in the operation of the Act.
