New Scotland football manager

24/01/2008

The Scottish Football Association have appointed George Burley as the new Scotland manager.

First Minister Alex Salmond said:

"George Burley is a very good appointment by the SFA, and I wish him every success as the Scotland manager. The quality of the shortlisted candidates was exceptionally high.

"George has enjoyed tremendous success in Scottish and English football, and is known for his strong man-management skills.

"He was extraordinarily successful at Hearts, guiding the club to their best start in the league since 1914, and if he can achieve that with Scotland he will be a very popular man.

"Things are looking up for Scottish football, just as things are looking up for Scotland."

Burley, currently the Southampton manager, has signed a contract until 2012.
