Action to protect cod stocks
31/12/2007
For the first time Scottish fishermen are being advised where to expect spawning cod and are being asked to avoid these areas.
If spawning cod are found then fishermen will be asked to sound the alarm and a Real Time Voluntary Closure will come into affect.
This action is being taken to protect future cod stocks and is an example of how the Scottish industry is introducing sustainable fishing practices.
Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead said:
"For the first four months of 2008 we will be operating real time closures with the purpose of protecting spawning cod. We have issued a map to fishermen which identifies areas where spawning cod can be expected to be found.
"We are actively encouraging fishermen to avoid these areas where possible. But if spawning cod are found in these or other areas the fishermen will be asked to sound the alarm and a real time closure will come into affect.
"There has been excellent co-operation over the introduction of voluntary real time closures to protect future cod stocks. This is just one of a number of conservation measures that is being taken forward by the industry in Scotland.
"Our hard work is beginning to pay off. The landmark agreement reached at the fisheries council in December will reward Scottish fishermen with extra days at sea in return for adopting sustainable fishing practices."
The real time closures for spawning cod will run from 1st January to 30th April 2008.
The real time closure for juvenile cod will recommence from 1st May 2008.
