NHS Board Chair appointments

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today announced the new appointment of number of NHS Board Chairs across NHS Scotland.
Ms Sturgeon said
"I am very pleased to announce these appointments. All of the new Chairs have shown strong commitment to public service and have demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues being faced within NHSScotland. They each bring a wealth of experience and knowledge which will be extremely valuable to their Boards. I look forward to working with them all in the vital task of improving the health of the people of Scotland."
GRAMPIAN NHS BOARD
Dr David Cameron
Dr David Cameron is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and has operated a Food Safety Consultancy and Training company based in Aberdeen since 1990. Previously he was a Senior Lecturer in Food Microbiology, Food Science and Nutrition at what is now The Robert Gordon University. He has been a Non-Executive Board Member of NHS Grampian since January 2005 and Chair of the Aberdeen City CHP since June 2005. He also holds a ministerial appointment as a Member of the Scottish Food Advisory Committee of the Food Standards Agency, for which he receives an annual remuneration of £5,000. Throughout his professional career he has been actively involved with The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) and was President of REHIS in 1993 and again in 2004.
This appointment will be for a period of two years from 3 December 2007 to 30 November 2009.
This post is part-time with a time commitment of three days per week for which the annual remuneration is £30,460.
Grampian NHS Board is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in the Grampian region.
GREATER GLASGOW AND CLYDE NHS BOARD
Mr Andrew Robertson OBE
Andrew is a former solicitor in private practice. He graduated LLB from Edinburgh University and then trained with Maclay Murray and Spens in Glasgow, before joining TC Young where he remained a partner until his retirement in 2006. Andrew developed the firm's specialist expertise in Social Housing and Charity Law, to the extent that the firm is now recognised as leading practitioners in both areas of law in Scotland. Within his professional practice, Andrew was Secretary of Erskine Hospital for over 25 years, and founder secretary and legal adviser to both the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and the Clydeside Area Federation of Community based Housing Associations and Co-ops. In 1994 he was appointed an OBE in recognition of his work with the community based housing movement in Scotland. Andrew's work within the NHS started in 1993 when he was appointed to the chair of the Community and Mental Health Trust in Greater Glasgow with subsequent appointments to chair the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Trust and then the Primary Care Trust in Glasgow. Latterly he has been Vice Chair of the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board. Also, Andrew chaired the Post Office Users Council for Scotland between 1988 and 1999.
This appointment will be for a period of four years from 3 December 2007 to 30 November 2011.
This post is part-time with a time commitment of three days per week for which the annual remuneration is £38,075.

ORKNEY NHS BOARD
Mr John Scott
Hawick-born journalist John Ross Scott, has in his previous 23 years of public life, from 1980-2003, served as Convenor of Scottish Borders Council, Chairman of the South Of Scotland Transport Partnership, Chairman of the Waverley Rail Partnership, Chairman of Scottish Association of Direct Labour Organisations Highways Committee and was one of two Scottish members on the UK Road Safety Advisory Panel. A former Scottish Liberal Democrat Transport spokesman (1998-99) he also served as Honorary Provost of Hawick (1999-2002) during the Millennium celebrations and devastating foot and mouth outbreak. He was a key player in the South of Scotland European Partnership, stood twice as a Liberal Democrat on the South of Scotland list and once as a Westminster Liberal Democrat candidate in Dumfries. A past chief reporter and health correspondent with the award-winning 'Southern Reporter', and former Editor of the 'Hawick News' he moved to Orkney in 2003 when appointed first editor of the new and now highly acclaimed weekly newspaper 'Orkney Today'. He has resigned from this post to take on the new NHS Orkney responsibilities.
This appointment will be for a period of two years from 3 December 2007 to 30 November 2009.

TAYSIDE NHS BOARD
Mr Alexander Watson OBE
Sandy Watson taught Classics before going into the Education Directorate, becoming Director of Education and Chief Executive of Tayside Regional Council and latterly Chief Executive of Angus Council, retiring in 2005. He chaired the Project Group which delivered one million concessionary fare cards to the over-60s and the disabled; is Chairman of Angus College Board of Management; a Member of Court and Honorary Fellow of the University of Abertay, Dundee, and was appointed recently as a Deputy Lieutenant for Angus. He has acted as Secretary of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, has a close association with Young Scot and has been Chairman of the Scottish Advisory Committee of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. He holds a ministerial appointment as a member of the Scottish Funding Council for which he receives an annual remuneration of £10,980. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2003.
This appointment will be for a period of four years from 3 December 2007 to 30 November 2011.

NHS HEALTH SCOTLAND BOARD
Ms Margaret Burns CBE
Margaret Burns lives in Aberdeen and was, until March this year, a member of the Health and Safety Commission and helped establish and chaired the Partnership for Health and Safety in Scotland. In the past she has worked for a number of consumer organisations including the Scottish Consumer Council and Consumers' Association. She is presently a non-executive director of NHS Grampian and a member of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management.
This appointment will be for a period of four years from 3 December 2007 to 30 November 2011.
This post is part-time with a time commitment of three days per week for which the annual remuneration is £23,930.
NHS Health Scotland is responsible for the delivery of health improvement programmes to a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders working to improve Scotland's health.
These Ministerial appointments were made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, John Scott has stood as a prospective Liberal Democrat candidate for the Orkney constituency. He has served as a Liberal Democrat Councillor until 2003. Mr Scott has also canvassed and spoken on behalf of the Liberal Democrat Party. None of the other appointees have been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
