Scotland's Chief Statistician today published a range of statistics relating to pupils in and outwith Scotland's schools.

This includes statistics on Maths and English class sizes in S1 and S2, children educated outwith school and pupil numbers and projected numbers for future years.

The main findings are:

  • 318 of the 376 secondary schools had an average class size of 20 or less in each of the S1 Maths, S2 Maths, S1 English and S2 English. In 64 schools all such classes had 20 or fewer pupils
  • There were 1,172 pupils educated outwith school due to health or other issues, and 703 known to be educated outwith school due to parental choice
  • The total number of pupils receiving publicly funded school education is projected to decrease steadily from 700,000 in 2006, to 660,000 in 2013, then rise until peaking at 680,000 in 2022
