Science experts wanted

08/11/2007

Science Experts from across Scotland are to be enlisted to advise the Scottish Government on science strategy, policy and priorities.

The Scottish Science Advisory Committee (SSAC) is looking for new members to boost membership.

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, who has responsibility for Science, Fiona Hyslop said:

"It's vital for the Scottish Government to have access to authoritative and independent advice across all scientific disciplines and issues. Advising Ministers through the Chief Scientific Adviser, the SSAC will continue to comprise experts drawn widely from Scotland's science and innovation base. I look forward to receiving its advice as we develop our priorities for science within the context of a Smarter Scotland."

Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland and co-chair of the SSAC, said:

"I believe very strongly that science is Scotland's future. SSAC provides a unique forum for our top science experts to develop advice for the Scottish Government on how we can best capture the many exciting opportunities that science is providing. It is now time to refresh the membership, and I hope that those with the qualifications and experience will consider applying, whether working in research, education, business or other science-related fields."

Up to eight new members are being sought, to fill a total Committee membership of 17.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on November 30, 2007.

Following the appointment of the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, Professor Anne Glover, the SSAC has been running on a temporary basis to allow her to review the operation of the committee. Following this review, Ministers agreed to continue supporting the Committee, with a refreshed membership and new reporting structures.

The SSAC will report directly to the CSA, who will chair the Committee in conjunction with an independent co-Chair elected by Committee members. Dr Stuart Monro, Scientific Director of Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, has been elected by the existing Committee members to work alongside the CSA as co-Chair.

Although the SSAC will not be constituted as a formal advisory public body, the operation of the Committee, including the recruitment process for new members, will follow the spirit of the Nolan principles. Senior representatives of CBI Scotland and the Royal Society of Edinburgh will be involved in the selection board for these appointments.

New members will be appointed in early 2008.
