Glasgow bid team arrive in Sri Lanka

07/11/2007

Nothing can be taken for granted in Glasgow's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, First Minister Alex Salmond said as the Scottish delegation arrived in Sri Lanka today.

The decision on whether Glasgow or Abuja in Nigeria get the Games will be announced on Friday.

Mr Salmond said:

"Everybody should understand this has never been a walkover or something that is easy. We are in a real competition for something which is really important.

"The best way to approach things is to take nothing for granted, leave no stone unturned and make sure every single delegate is spoken to."

The winning team must get at least 36 of the available 71 votes to secure the games.

Mr Salmond added:

"If we win this bid on Friday, every single person in Scotland will walk that bit taller."
