Funding boost for primary care premises

01/11/2007

Health boards across Scotland are to benefit from an extra £23m to improve and modernise primary care premises.

The money will be used to make a range of improvements at premises including community hospitals, dental centres and community health centres.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon said: "The Scottish Government is absolutely committed to ensuring that as much healthcare as possible is delivered locally.

"I realise that ensuring that primary care premises are fit for the purpose of delivering 21st century healthcare is essential to realising this ambition.

"That is why I am delighted to be able to announce today a further £23m to enable boards to make improvements to primary care premises.

"I am also pleased to see that many of the projects being planned by boards bring together health services with other vital local services. This exactly mirrors the Scottish Government's vision of making local services as accessible as possible."

Some of the premises set to benefit include:

  • Jedburgh Health Centre in NHS Borders, which will get £432,000 towards an extension to the existing centre for delivering community health, local authority social work and police services
  • Ayr Neighbourhood Centre in NHS Ayrshire & Arran, which will be provided with £1.4m to help create a centre bringing together a community dental suite, mental health care facility, family counselling centre, child and adolescent mental health service, student training and bases for community mental health and social work teams
  • Drumchapel Children and Family Centre in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. £2.2m of funding will be used to extend the new facility and reconfigure the adjoining Drumchapel Health Centre and Mental Health Resource Centre, enabling services including health visitors, addiction services and speech therapists to be brought onto the site
  • Equipment for new dental centres in Tain and Nairn, costing £838,300
  • Firhill Health and Social Care Centre in Edinburgh. NHS Lothian, will get £3.491m towards replacing existing accommodation and providing two GP practices, district nurses, health visitors, physiotherapy, podiatry, social work and an older people's day centre

The Primary and Community Care Premises Modernisation Programme has so far provided £138m for investment in Primary and Community Care infrastructure.

The funding announced today is for the financial year 2007/08.
