Foot and Mouth

19/10/2007

The European Commission's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (Scofcah) has decided to allow further relaxations on movements of meat from Scotland following the foot and mouth outbreak in England.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead said:

"We welcome the decision by Scofcah to further relax restrictions and will continue to work with the UK Government and European Commission to allow further relaxations as soon as possible.

"Today's decision means that multiple pick-ups will be allowed and the pre-slaughter residency is reduced from 30 days to 21 days. It is another step in getting back to business but we are by no means out of the woods yet. The Scottish Government will continue to pull out all the stops to support our rural communities and this vital industry."
