Child poverty statistics

11/10/2007

Estimates of the number of Scottish children living in combined low income and material deprivation have been released by Scotland's Chief Statistician.

This follows Tuesday's announcement from HM Treasury of the methodology for calculating the indicator.

The indicator is the third tier of the child poverty measure developed by Department for Work and Pensions in response to the 1999 UK commitment to eradicating child poverty within a generation.

  • In 2005-06, 13 per cent of Scottish children (130,000) were in Low Income and Material Deprivation
  • In 2004-05, 16 per cent of Scottish children (170,000) were in Low Income and Material Deprivation
