Fisheries Ministers meet in Peterhead
05/10/2007
Fisheries ministers from all four UK administrations met in Scotland today for the first time.
Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, was joined by Jonathan Shaw from Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Michelle Gildernew from Northern Ireland and Elin Jones from Wales.
Mr Lochhead said:
"I am delighted to welcome my ministerial colleagues from England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
"I am pleased that they have been able to accept my invitation to the meeting and am particularly pleased that we are holding it in Peterhead, a vibrant fishing community and the largest white fish port in Europe.
"I am sure this will provide a useful insight into Scotland's fishing industry and the opportunity to hear from our fishermen and all those involved in contributing to its current and future prosperity.
"The Scottish Government promised at the outset a fresh start and fresh ideas for fisheries.
"All four administrations have new Ministers and this will be an excellent opportunity to start a cordial and constructive relationship and have initial face to face discussions on some of the key issues.
"This way we can see areas of common interest and learn from each other's perspectives"
