Lamb marketing campaign
24/08/2007
Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, today announced extra funding to encourage more Scots to eat more lamb.
The £100,000 matches the same amount already pledged by the industry body, Quality Meat Scotland, for its autumn campaign to get more lamb on our plates.
"It has been a very anxious three weeks for all our rural communities.
"It has been especially tough for our sheep farmers in what should be their busiest time of the year.
"We have had excellent news this week but a lot of work lies ahead to get Scotch lamb back into export markets.
"We can all do our bit by putting more lamb on our tables.
"Clearly there are wider challenges facing the entire livestock industry in the wake of the foot and mouth outbreak in Surrey.
"The rapid progress we have made so far has been due to a huge team effort by our officials and veterinary staff in Scotland and the UK ministers and their teams.
"Today I have written to Secretary of State Hilary Benn offering my thanks to Defra, in particular to Chief Vet Debby Reynolds and her staff both for their sterling work in the protection and surveillance zones and in leading the UK's negotiations in Brussels."
