Risk Management Authority

The Cabinet Secretary for Justice today announced the appointment of a new member to the Risk Management Authority (RMA).
Professor Don Grubin has been Professor of Forensic Psychiatry at Newcastle University since 1997. He qualified in medicine from the University of London in 1985 and received his psychiatric training at the Maudsley Hospital, Institute of Psychiatry and Broadmoor Hospital. As well as his extensive clinical work with sex offenders and forensic patients generally, he has researched and published widely in respect of a number of areas in forensic psychiatry.
Professor Grubin is a member of the Home Office Correctional Services Accreditation Panel and receives £500 per day for this work.
The appointment will be for four years and will run from August 13, 2007 to August 12, 2011.
The post is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £5,580 per annum for a time commitment of two to three days per month.
The RMA, which was established by the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2003, is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body with a defined remit and set of roles relating to the risk assessment and management of serious violent and sexual offenders whose liberty presents a risk to the public. It is intended that the RMA will become the recognised expert authority on risk assessment and risk management.
This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, Professor Grubin has not been involved in any political activity.
