Cash to improve school buildings

Schools across Scotland are to share in an additional £40 million for improvements to buildings.

The Schools Fund provides capital grant funding to councils for the maintenance and refurbishment of school buildings. The extra £40 million beings the total amount available this year to £146 million.

Children and Early Years Minister Adam Ingram said:

"Schools have a key role to play, not just in our children's education but at the heart of our communities. A simple thing, like upgrading sports facilities, can have huge benefits for both pupils and the local neighbourhood.

"The extra cash will help encourage our young people to be healthier as well as to look out for the environment.

"Where schools face accommodation challenges, councils can also use the cash to prepare for smaller class sizes by making essential changes to school buildings.

"Building a Smarter Scotland is a key priority for this Scottish Government and I am sure this investment, and the resulting improvements, will pay dividends in the years to come."
