New judge appointed

Her Majesty the Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister, has appointed Hugh Matthews QC to be a Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland.

Mr Matthews (53) is a graduate of the University of Glasgow. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1979, taking silk in 1992. He was appointed a sheriff of Glasgow and Strathkelvin in January 1997.

Mr Matthews fills the vacancy in the Outer House of the Court of Session arising from the death earlier this year of The Honourable Lord Dawson.

This appointment arises from the death of Lord Dawson in June 2007.

After graduating LL.B (Hons) from the University of Glasgow, Mr Matthews undertook a legal apprenticeship with Messrs Jas Campbell and Co WS of Saltcoats. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in July 1979 and practised at the Bar until his appointment as a sheriff in January 1997. He was standing Junior Counsel to the Department of Employment in Scotland from June 1984 until March 1988, and served as an Advocate Depute from April 1988 until January 1993.

Mr Matthews sat as a temporary sheriff from January 1993 until December 1996. He was appointed a temporary judge in February 2004.

The salary of a judge is £164,430.
