13/06/2007

The issues affecting older people were highlighted today by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon when she attended the Scottish Pensioners' Forum Annual Conference in Perth.

Ms Sturgeon reinforced the intention of the Scottish government to deliver on the commitments that will bring much needed benefits to Scotland's older population.

These commitments include:

  • The development of free personal care
  • Improving dementia services
  • Investing in the care home sector
  • Tackling fuel poverty
  • Developing regional transport services
  • Doing more to help Scotland's carers

Ms Sturgeon said:

"Our aim is to help people to sustain and improve their health, especially in disadvantaged communities, and to ensure, better, local and faster access to health care.

"We are hear to listen to and work with elderly people. Most importantly, we promise to deliver quality services that are effective to their needs.

"The Scottish government, for example, will ensure that Dementia is a national priority and that Scotland's public bodies work to the same standards. We will work with and ensure that local authorities and Health Boards agree a way forward to improving services for those with dementia and their families."
