Priorities for 'safer, stronger' Scotland
06/06/2007
A 'toughening up' of attitudes to illegal alcohol sales to underage drinkers are among the law and order priorities of the new Government, MSPs were told today.
Knife crime and organised crime are to be subject to an 'uncompromising' approach while policing capacity is to be increased by the equivalent of 1,000 police officers, according to Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.
Money confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act is to be re-invested in deprived areas, with £8 million expected to be available by this autumn.
Mr MacAskill said:
"A safe, strong community isn't just one safe from crime and free from antisocial behaviour. It is also one with a good physical environment with access to high quality services and amenities. One where crime prevention is designed in from the very first plans. Above all, one built not just on rights but responsibilities. Responsibility by each individual for their actions and responsibility of government for our communities. Where that culture flourishes we will support it. Where it is fading, we will rekindle it. And where it is undermined and abused, we will fight for it."
