Gardening Scotland 2007

01/06/2007

Gardening Scotland 2007, the country's national celebration of gardens and outdoor living, got under way at Ingliston near Edinburgh today.

Environment Minister Michael Russell presented awards for Scotland's Finest Woodlands and visited the Garden for Life Village "The Living Garden" which promotes ways to garden more sustainably, including home composting, reducing water and energy used and the waste created.

Mr Russell said:

"In my first weeks in office, I've already heard of the many benefits the great outdoors can bring to us all. From our open woodlands to the smallest garden, everyone can play their part in making Scotland greener.

"The Living Garden brings together ideas to encourage wildlife as well as ecologically-sound gardening techniques such as home composting. This illustrates the ways in which we can make our gardens beautiful, as well as healthier places for people and the planet.

"I was also delighted to present Scotland's Finest Woodland awards. These awards celebrate the fact we are very fortunate in Scotland to enjoy beautiful woodland environments and recognise schools which have gone that extra mile to help their pupils appreciate the many benefits woodlands provide.

"Gaining an award is a huge achievement, but passing on the knowledge which will enable young people to enjoy these environments for the rest of their lives is a priceless gift."

Gardening Scotland 2007 continues over the weekend.
