Debate on Scottish economy

29/05/2007

The priorities for the new Scottish Government's goal of achieving sustained economic growth will be set out in the first debate on the economy at Holyrood this week.

Ahead of the debate Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth John Swinney said:

"On Wednesday we will set out our thinking on our priority to deliver strong, sustained and sustainable economic growth, creating the wealth to fund services and meet the needs of the Scottish people.

"Key sectors have a vital role to play in making Scotland wealthier. We will support them by lifting the jams in Scotland's congested transport network. And we will ensure that the benefits of Scotland's increased wealth are shared more fairly through the delivery of efficient public services."

At the weekend Mr Swinney met .senior Executives at Standard Life, representatives of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and visited the Stirling-Alloa Kincardine railway project.

At Stirling Castle he had a day of meetings with key economic and public sector interests.

Stirling Castle, cared for by Historic Scotland, is one of the country's top visitor attractions and represents real success and opportunity for growing Scotland's tourism.
