7,000 take part in NY Run

The fourth Scotland Run has taken place in Central Park, New York City today with more than 7,000 runners taking part. This is the best attended 10k in the city in recent years.

The men's race was run by Karl Dusen, who clocked 30:45 and the women's by Loretta Kilmer with 37:18.

The race, started by the Scottish Parliament's Presiding Officer George Reid, loops through Central Park finishing at the famous Tavern on the Green. The run, sponsored by the Scottish Executive, marks the beginning of Tartan Week 2007.

Participating in the race was First Secretary for Scottish Affairs, Michael Kellet who said:

"The race is a corner stone of the tartan week calendar and today we've seen a record number of runners and supporters taking part. I thoroughly enjoyed running today, it was great to see so many Saltires flying and people cheering us on."

Alastair Hay of Queen Margaret University finished second in the men's race 30.46 minutes. He said:

"It's a great race to be part of, the support was excellent, I could hear the bagpipes half way round inspiring me to run faster."
