International lifelong learning strategy

20/03/2007

A new strategy that aims to position Scotland as a world leader in international post-school education was launched today.

Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"Further and higher education play an important role in growing the economy and making Scotland an attractive place to live, work and study.

"We have a lot to be proud of in our education system and its reputation for quality and creativity. But with these achievements comes a responsibility to look forward and evolve as we deliver world class learning opportunities to people in Scotland and from abroad.

"This International Lifelong Learning Strategy is a collaborative approach which will enhance our reputation as a world leader in education excellence.

"Education is essential to a vibrant, dynamic and successful Scotland and I am determined to cement Scotland's place as an international hub of learning excellence."

The Strategy aims to:

  • Attract talent to Scotland and offer a high quality experience
  • Facilitate the universal employability of all students in Scotland
  • Participate actively in European and international policy development
  • Lead development, capacity building and sustainability projects
  • Foster international partnerships and other strategic alliances

The International Lifelong Learning - Scotland's contribution document has been developed collaboratively by a group of stakeholders including the Scottish Executive, Education UK Scotland at the British Council, representatives of colleges and universities and Scottish businesses.

The key task of the co-ordinating group formed from these representatives will be to ensure the development and delivery of an action plan on behalf of Scottish Ministers.
