Regeneration funding for Edinburgh
14/03/2007
Regeneration funding worth £14.4 million for Craigmillar in Edinburgh was announced today.
The money is to be used to improve all aspects of the local area and will provide new homes, jobs, schools, and leisure facilities.
Communities Minister Rhona Brankin made the announcement as she visited Craigmillar to see work start on the 22-acre Greendykes site, earmarked for hundreds of new homes.
The Minister also announced that Edinburgh City Council will receive £36 million for affordable housing investment across the city that will provide 600 new homes in the coming year.
Ms Brankin said:
"This money will help drive forward the regeneration of Craigmillar but it is much more than simply a cheque that will pay for the bricks and mortar.
"It will make a massive difference to the local community - transforming lives for the better.
"Today's announcement is an investment in the future of Craigmillar and of Edinburgh. It will encourage further investment, provide new opportunities and fund the long term improvements the area needs.
"Working with local residents the local urban regeneration company, PARC Craigmillar, will provide new homes, new jobs, new local facilities and - just as importantly - a renewed sense of local identity and pride for the people of Craigmillar.
"I am also able to announce today that the whole of Edinburgh will receive £36 million to provide more of the warm, decent and affordable homes that people deserve across the city."
The £14.4 million goes to the Urban Regeneration Company, Promoting and Regenerating Craigmillar (PARC) with £11.2 million of it to take forward projects in PARC's business plan over the next two years. The remaining £3.2 million is for the Niddrie Mill and St Francis shared campus primary school.
The direct physical output from the proposed URC-assisted projects is estimated as:
- 300,000 sq. ft of industrial, retail, leisure and office space
- New schools and community leisure facilities for all ages of the community
- Approx 3000 residential units, including approx 500 for social rent
- Create a new and coherent high street for Craigmillar which will become the heart of the community
Together these development outputs are assessed as providing the potential to generate by the 15 year investment of the URC:
- 6,000 job opportunities
- 75 new businesses
The £36 million represents the Affordable Housing Investment Programme investment in Edinburgh in 2007/08. It is part of a total investment in affordable housing across Scotland of a record £584 million that will provide around 8,000 affordable homes
The £36 million will mean:
- Significant ongoing financial commitment in Moredun, Hyvots and Oxgangs
- New projects starting in 2007/08 including Hyvots Phase 3 and Oxgangs Phase 2. CEC will also see 250 new units through the affordable housing policy in the City Centre
- First major tender approvals in the Western Harbour Regeneration area adding over 100 affordable housing units.
- Craigmillar - expect to spend £3 million in 2007/08 adding to previous investment over the last 3 years of £6.81 million which provided over 100 units. Plan to approve around 60 units in 2007/08.
