FM promises to continue with international support
27/02/2007
First Minister Jack McConnell praised Oxfam for tackling poverty throughout the world over the past 65 years and for constantly challenging the government in Scotland to do more.
Mr McConnell was speaking at a reception for Oxfam in the Scottish Parliament where he set out the contribution the Executive was making to international development in places such as Malawi and promised to maintain that support in the future.
Mr McConnell said:
"For over 65 years Oxfam has been making a difference to people's lives around the world. You're active here in Scotland too, raising funds, helping young Scots learn about global issues and constantly challenging the government in Scotland to do more.
"Devolved Scotland should never become insular. Throughout our history we have looked beyond our borders. I am determined that we will continue to support Scots helping those elsewhere in the world who are in desparate need.
"Through the Executive's International Development Fund we have been able to support 58 projects on educational opportunities and health improvement and offer other assistance. These include Oxfam's efforts to help HIV/Aids victims in Malawi and working to build new opportunities for those affected by the earthquake in Pakistan.
"Working in the field of International Development is hard, challenging and often controversial. Oxfam has stuck at it through fluctuating support from governments and the public. I admire the tenacity they have shown in their efforts to improve people's lives.
"This tenacity and dedication I saw at first hand in Malawi always serves as a useful reminder to politicians not to give in to the criticism of those who would have us scale back our support. The work of Scots in some of the poorest parts of the world deserves our support. That is what we will do and we will help them make a real difference."
