Extra funding for schools
09/02/2007
Scottish schools are to get an extra £6 million to spend this year, thanks to a funding boost from the Executive.
Education Minister Hugh Henry said:
"I am determined to support those in the front line providing education services in every way possible. At this time of year, I am aware that some school budgets can be under real pressure.
"Councils know where the pressures are most acute, so I have asked them to distribute this extra cash to the schools they think need it most.
"Headteachers who receive a share of the additional money can spend it on whatever they wish - paper for the photocopier, library books or other essential supplies and equipment."
The £6 million of additional resources is being allocated to councils for distribution to schools in their areas under the Grant for Improvements in School Education (Scotland) Regulations 1998.
The decision as to how a council's share of the £6 million is distributed to schools is for the council to decide. However, each council's entire allocation must be distributed to schools; there is to be no displacement or reduction of any other aspect of devolved schools budgets as a result of these additional resources; and all the additional resources must be spent by the end of the current financial year, i.e by the end of March.
