Latest housing trends

Information on housing is published today in the statistical bulletin Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending 30 September 2006. The bulletin presents quarterly information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are:

  • New house building: 6,408 new dwellings were started during the period July to September 2006, 1,080 (20 per cent) more than during the same period in the previous year. 6,248 dwellings were completed, 395 (seven per cent) more than during the same period in 2005
  • Sales of social sector dwellings: A total of 1,968 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period July to September 2006, a decrease of 441 (18 per cent) on the same period in 2005
  • Lettings and evictions: During the quarter July to September 2006, there were 7,796 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 42 (0.5 per cent) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 247 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 32 (15 per cent) more than during July to September 2005
