Local government elections 2007

25/01/2007

The Scottish Local Government Elections Order 2007 has been proposed in Parliament today by Tom McCabe, Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform.

The rules set out in the order deal with the conduct of election for local authorities and include the introduction of:

  • Procedures to run an election using the single transferable vote (STV) and e-counting system
  • Administrative changes to local government elections made by the Local Electoral Administration and Registrations Services (Scotland) Act 2006
  • Replication of some administrative changes made to Parliamentary elections by the Electoral Administration Act 2006

Mr McCabe said:

"The Order being debated in Parliament today is significant in dealing with the detailed, administrative processes involved in running a local government election. These rules introduce a system of election designed to give people more say in the running of their councils and signal an important milestone for Scottish local democracy.

"The e-counting system will allow for the quick, accurate and reliable counting of votes and the calculations required by the move to STV."
