Minister comments on GDP increase
24/01/2007
Figures published today show that Scotland's economy is continuing to grow.
The 2006 quarter three figures show that Scottish GDP rose by 0.5 per cent compared with the previous quarter, and by 2.3 per cent over the year, ahead of Scotland's long term (1975-2005) annual average rate of 1.8 per cent.
The figures show increases in the service sector, which represents two thirds of the Scottish economy, and in construction but a decline in production.
Commenting on the figures, Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"These figures show sustained growth for the Scottish economy. Annual GDP growth has been above the trend growth rate of 1.8 per cent for nine successive quarters now.
"The service sector continues to be the major contributor to overall economic growth in Scotland, but there remain challenges in some other sectors. My chief priority remains to ensure the best possible conditions for economic growth to continue throughout 2007 and beyond.
"Our economic growth is delivering real results. We have our highest levels of employment, business surveys are pointing to strong growth in private sector output and our small businesses are expressing confidence for the year ahead."
