Sheep scab
18/01/2007
The Sheep Scab Industry Working Group met for the first time today to develop new initiatives to reduce the incidence of scab cases in Scotland.
Evidence from two surveys carried out last year by the Executive, to gauge the views of farmers and the veterinary profession on how best to deal with sheep scab, demonstrated a willingness from both the sheep profession and the veterinary profession to work in partnership with government.
The aim is to develop a strategy to tackle the problem which will be long-lasting. Ministers agreed to the establishment of a working group to help take forward this new initiative.
The remit of the Group is:
- To consider new measures for the control of sheep scab in Scotland taking account of the wider industry's views on what they consider is required, practical and achievable
- To make recommendations as to how local/regional co-operation can be achieved to ensure compulsory treatment is undertaken
- To promote good management and biosecurity practice to reduce the spread of sheep scab within Scotland and reduce the risk of introducing scab into Scotland
- To recognise similar initiatives in England and Wales
The Working Group's aims and remit are in line with the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy, which states that prevention is better than cure.
The new Working Group contains representatives from:
The Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD)
