Cereals and oilseed rape

11/01/2007

The final estimates of the 2006 Scottish cereal and oilseed rape harvest were issued today.

Cereal production was 61,000 tonnes higher than the provisional estimate published on October 12, 2006, mainly due to higher barley yields reported in the Cereal Production Survey compared with the initial estimates.

These final estimates indicate that, compared with the 2005 harvest :-

  • Total cereal production decreased slightly by 11,000 tonnes or 0.4 per cent to 2.667 million tonnes. Most of the 3.2 per cent decrease in cereal areas was matched by a 2.9 per cent increase in overall yields to 6.7 tonnes per hectare
  • Total barley production decreased by 59,000 tonnes or 3.4 per cent to 1.678 million tonnes, mostly due to a reduction in areas under production
  • Wheat production increased by 23,000 tonnes or 2.7 per cent to 845,000 tonnes, mostly due to an increase in area under production
  • The production of oats increased by 23,000 tonnes or 20.1 per cent to 136,000 tonnes, which was due to increases in yields as well as area
  • Oilseed rape production remained similar at 123,000 tonnes, with the decrease in area matched by an increase in yields
