Scottish Enterprise Chair re-appointed

Deputy First Minister and Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Nicol Stephen today announced the re-appointment of Sir John Ward as Chair of the Board of Scottish Enterprise.

Welcoming the re-appointment, Mr Stephen said:

"Scottish Enterprise has a vital role to play in promoting economic development. Since his appointment in 2004, Sir John Ward has provided strong leadership and direction to Scottish Enterprise. I welcome his re-appointment and look forward to his continuing contribution for a further two years."

Sir John has used his depth of experience in economic, industrial and educational issues to meet the challenges faced by Scottish Enterprise.

He was appointed as Chair of Scottish Enterprise in February 2004. His re-appointment will be for two years and runs from 14 February 2007 to 13 February 2009. This post is part-time attracting a remuneration of £38,055 for a time commitment of 1.5 days per week.

Commenting on his re-appointment, Sir John said:

"I am delighted to continue this role for a second term. It is an exciting time, with some positive opportunities to deliver stronger economic growth identified and a number of changes underway at Scottish Enterprise to ensure it is well placed, locally and nationally, to help realise them."

Background:

Scottish Enterprise is Scotland's largest non-departmental public body (NDPB) and is the Scottish Executive's main agency for economic development in North East, Central and Lowland Scotland. Highlands and Islands Enterprise is the companion agency with responsibility for economic development in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The Executive provides the Enterprise Networks with a clear strategic direction through it's 'A Smart, Successful Scotland' strategy.

Sir John Ward is a Chartered Accountant who following a career in international business has held a number of public appointments including the Chairmanship of CBI Scotland, Scottish Qualifications Agency, Quality Scotland Foundation and Scottish Homes. He was awarded the CBE in the 1995 Birthday Honours and received a Knighthood in 2002 New Years Honours for Services to Public Life in Scotland. Sir John's current appointments include Chairmanship of Dunfermline Building Society and European Assets Trust NV - a listed company based in Holland. Sir John is also a Trustee of the National Museums of Scotland.

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Sir John Ward has declared no political activity within the last five years.
