First Minister's Christmas card

08/12/2006

Celebrating the journeys that children have made, to Scotland, from Scotland or just from the next street, is the theme of the First Minister's Christmas card this year.

Pupils from Bruntsfield Primary School in Edinburgh who made the migration-themed patchwork tapestry featured on the card, joined the First Minister in Bute House today to see the final product.

The patchwork was produced as part of the school's migration project which gave all pupils the chance to explain their journeys or their families' journeys.

The card will go to thousands of people in Scotland and around the world.

First Minister's Christmas card

The First Minister said:

"This Christmas card reflects the message of Christmas - friendship and goodwill to all.

"I am delighted to be able to share with others the moving stories of the children from Bruntsfield Primary. Their wonderful patchwork makes for a colourful Christmas card, but the wonderful stories behind the pictures are even more colourful.

"The children's stories reflect Scotland today. But what has struck me most is the way they have all worked together to tell their stories. Sharing their experiences has helped bring them all together, and developed their understanding of the world."

The First Minister visited Bruntsfield Primary School in October this year together with the Immigration Minister Liam Byrne at the Home Office.

Many of the stories told by the pupils of Bruntsfield Primary have been published in a book called "Moving Stories: Tales of Migration from a School Community".

The First Minister met 12 pupils from Bruntsfield Primary who had been involved in the migration project.
