First forum for teachers' debate
08/12/2006
Teachers can from today log on to a new website to take part in the Teachers for Excellence debate, as well as read articles by some of the leading lights in the education world. www.teachersforexcellence.co.uk
The debate is the first time the Executive has used a discussion forum as part of a consultation.
The debate aims to establish what skills, qualities and expertise teachers will need to deliver A Curriculum for Excellence - the 3-18 curriculum currently being developed. It's also an opportunity for teachers to find out more about, and air their views on, the emerging curriculum.
Education Minister Hugh Henry said:
"Teachers are the lifeblood of our schools, helping children throughout Scotland realise their full potential.
"One of the most exciting developments currently underway in Scottish education is A Curriculum for Excellence - our 3-18 curriculum.
"But this curriculum can only be successfully delivered if our teachers are equipped with the knowledge, expertise and commitment they need.
"That's where this debate comes in. I hope our teachers will rise to the challenge and work with us to shape their futures. By providing honest and constructive feedback, they can have their say and ensure Scottish teachers truly become Teachers for Excellence.
"To stimulate discussion, we've got a range of contributors lined up to offer their views. But the views I really want to hear are from the chalkface - that's why I want as many teachers as possible to take part."
The debate kicks off with contributions from National CPD co-ordinator Margaret Alcorn, senior adviser on teaching in the Clinton administration Terry Dozier and the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
The Teachers for Excellence debate website is at www.teachersforexcellence.co.uk. The site will be updated every Friday, with articles from a range of contributors who will give their take on teachers for excellence.
