Lifting of final poultry disease restrictions in East Lothian

17/11/2006

Restrictions imposed on the movement of poultry, poultry products and litter following confirmation of Newcastle Disease (Pigeon Variant) in East Lothian, will be lifted at 00.01 on November 18.

Restrictions were imposed on the area surrounding premises at Fenton Barns where disease was confirmed on October 13.

Lifting of restrictions is in line with EU legislation. There have been no further findings of disease in the area in the last 30 days and clinical inspections of commercial flocks in the area have been completed.

Whilst there have been no further findings of disease, poultry-keepers are reminded of the importance of vigilance for signs of disease and the importance of reporting any suspicion to the State Veterinary Service.

Background

Newcastle Disease is a disease of poultry. It has no significant public health implications.

A number of internationally endangered species were conserved on the premises under special disease containment measures. These birds will remain under special biosecure restrictions, including regular veterinary supervision, for a further 30 days before they are released. As part of their conservation they have been vaccinated against Newcastle Disease.
