Small grants scheme for Malawi

13/11/2006

The Executive's Small Grants Scheme offering up to £20,000 to support development projects in Malawi is now available.

The £4.5 million International Development Fund has allocated £250,000 for ideas in education, health, civic society development and sustainable economic development and particularly those which fit closely to priority areas of the co-operation agreement with Malawi.

Patricia Ferguson, Minister responsible for international development, said:

"This is an opportunity for community groups to make a meaningful contribution to Scotland's efforts to help some of the world's poorest countries.

"The Scottish government's international development focus is about sharing common experience, and recognises our collective ambition to play our part in tackling global inequality."

"Last week's visit by government Ministers from Malawi proved to be very positive. Good progress is being made in all strands of the co-operation agreement.

"I am particularly pleased with formation of the business group, the growing cultural and tourism links and the new degree in primary education."
